The Kenya Institute of Migration Studies (KIMS) is the Regional Centre of Excellence for Migration Studies in the Horn of Africa. KIMS is hosted at the Population Studies and Research institute (PSRI) of University of Nairobi (UoN); and KIMS is collaborating with Maastricht University Graduate School of Governance. KIMS is “brainchild” of the Kenyan National Coordination Mechanism on Migration (NCM) Secretariat during tenure of Maj.Gen. (rtd) Dr. Gordon Kihalangwa as the Principal Secretary for State Department of Immigration & Citizen Services. KIMS combines academic excellence with valuable practical skills conducted at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in the State-of-Art Forensic Laboratory and planned academic tours to selected IGAD member states and Institutions performing migration functions.
KIMS is currently offering a one-year / three-semester Post Graduate Diploma in Migration Studies (PgDipMS). PgDipMS is the KIMS flagship project that was launched on 11th December 2018 by our Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i to train migration practitioners as identified by NCM from the 8 (eight) IGAD member states implemented with support from GoK, BMM, GIZ, IoM & Embassy of China in Nairobi.
The 1st cohort of PgDipMS commenced studies on 6th May 2019 and has a total 27 Students enrolled in the Programme from 4 out of 8 IGAD member states; Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda.
The 2nd cohort will be a class of 30 participants grouped into two categories. First category are 25 (twenty-five) government migration practitioners drawn from Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) member states working in the Directorate of Immigration Services, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Ministry of Labour, Anti Trafficking in Persons Unit and; National Police Service. Second category are 5 (five) slots for self-sponsored students who satisfy the UoN admission requirements into the Programme.
