The Vice-Chancellor has appointed Professor Murungaru Kimani as the new Director of Population Studies and Research Institute (PSRI). He replaces Professor Ikamari, who has been director since 2002. The new director will take office from 3rd of June 2014 for a period of three years. Professor Kimani is an Associate Research Professor at the Institute and has a PhD in Population Studies from the University of Nairobi.  He joined the University in 1986 as a Tutorial Fellow at the Institute and rose through the ranks to the current position in December 2013.


Professor Kimani has published in local, regional and international refereed journals. His current research focus is on contraceptive use within the broad context of demographic transition.  Professor Kimani has successfully supervised over 100 masters and two PhDs students.  Currently he is supervising three PhD students. He has been a visiting scholar to the Johns Hopkins and Brown universities in the USA.  Professor Kimani has reviewed manuscripts for the African Population Studies and the Population, Space and Place journals.


Professor Kimani has wide administrative experience within the university. He has previously acted as director of the Institute for over twenty times. He has also served as the training coordinator for PSRI academic programmes and the M&E short course. He is currently the coordinator of the Rusinga Demographic Surveillance research site in Homa Bay County. Professor Kimani is currently the Institute’s representative in the UON Senate.
